When an employee is terminated from a company, they have the opportunity to convert some or all of their coverage to an individual policy as they will no longer have access to the group benefits coverage. As a plan administrator, it is your responsibility to notify terminated employees of their conversion options.
Employees can convert Life, Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D), and Critical Illness coverage with their current insurance carrier, provided they were previously covered for those benefits.
Health and Dental coverage can be converted with Green Shield Canada’s Health Assist, provided they were previously covered for those benefits.
If the termination date has already occurred, the email is sent as soon as the offboarding is complete. If the termination is in the future, the email will be sent out on the morning of their termination date.
If an individual without prior group benefits coverage wanted an individual life insurance policy, they would have to complete an Evidence of Insurability form, also known as a Statement of Good Health.
The applicant would provide information surrounding their medical history, their current health status, and their family’s medical history in order for the insurance company to accurately provide a rate for the life insurance policy.
With Benefits Conversion, employees who apply for coverage within the 31 day or 90 day timeline will not have to complete that Statement of Good Health.
The option to send the benefits conversion email will only appear for employees who have been assigned to a plan in the Benefits Module. To learn how to create a plan and assign employees to it, please reach out to support@humi.ca.
In order to convert coverage, members have strict timelines to apply for this conversion.
- For Life, AD&D and Critical Illness, terminated employees have 31 days from their termination date.
- For Health and Dental, terminated employees have 90 days from their termination date.
We highly recommend that every employee is required to list an alternative, personal email address in Humi. Now is a good time to remind all employees of this requirement so they can add their email addresses.
If an employee still does not have one listed, we suggest using an administrator’s email address and forwarding it to the employee once the personal email address is received.
For employees who previously were covered under the group benefits plan with health and dental coverage, they would be able to convert that coverage using the Link option.
If you have employees who are currently not eligible for coverage under the group benefits plan (e.g. contract workers, part-time, seasonal or temporary employees), and you would like to explore coverage for them, the Zone option would be the place to go.
No, once the 90-days have expired, the Zone product line will be their only option.
I'm terminating an employee, but the benefits conversion option is not appearing, why is that?
